Bubblegum Smoothie Parfait
You may not know this about me, but I'm a sucker for all superfoods. Not just the trendy superfoods, I'd chug down the bitter TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and funky tasting no-added sugar herbs concoction just for the sake of health - and yes, superfoods aren't just the trendy and fancy smoothie bowl powders!
I grew up drinking jamu, a herbal concoction made of beneficial herbs and spices found locally in Indonesia. Things like turmeric, betel leaves, galangal, tamarind and other herbs that are only found locally here, like the Java Turmeric (a.k.a Temulawak)! The only downside is that they usually taste so bad, and if they do taste good, it's loaded with a ton of sugar (which I think undos all the healing benefits of those herbs!)
But times have changed and no longer do I need to chug down an entire mug of sugary and funky smelling herbal concoction. It's time to pack in your dreaded herbal superfoods in a BUBBLE GUM SMOOTHIE!
Never have I imagined that java turmeric would taste so good. It's sweet, fresh and has a bit of a tang - but also a slight caramel-isa undertone, which gives the smoothie that bubblegum slash rainbow paddle-pop likeness. It's perfect paired with pineapples (or oranges, cantaloupes, the possiblity is endless!) and layered on top of berry and rosella; another superfood and a powerhouse of vitamin C, detoxifying minerals and cholesterol-killaaaa! Together, they're a power couple in a delicious parfait. Java Turmeric is a dream come true for the health conscious: it's loaded with inflammatory and cancer fighting properties, boosts the immune system, gets rid of bloating and other digestive issues, is anti-aging, anti-virus, anti-bacterial and MORE! It's a nutrient powerhouse, even more nutrient packed than its famous sibling, turmeric, because it contains one micronutrient that turmeric doesn't: Xanthorrizol. It's micronutrient that's responsible for that anti-microbial property- goodbye bacterias!
When I get the chance to boost my health in a delicious cup of parfait that tastes like bubblegum, I definitely won't refuse. Health in a cup? No, it's practically health in a dessert!
Bubblegum Smoothie Parfait
Makes one serving
Ingredients
Yellow layer:
1 frozen banana
3/4 cup (100 grams) frozen pineapple
Pink layer:
1 frozen banana
3/4 cup frozen raspberries or strawberries
1/4 cup young coconut meat or plain yogurt
Method
1. To make a perfectly colored layered smoothie, blend the yellow layer first until texture resembles a thick ice cream consistency
2. Transfer to a bowl and set aside.
3. With the same blender, add and blend the pink layer until smooth. The consistency will be of a custard, thick but just a little runnier than the yellow layer.
4. Using a tall jar or glass, pour in the pink layer first and scoop the yellow layer on top.
5. Garnish with more berries, toasted coconut flakes or anything you want. Delicious eaten as is too!
